jeremy?: Boards of Canada - Sixtyniner
I like the boards, i like that downtempo, ambient shit. This is a good track, and at first I wasn't sure if I had heard it, but i found it in one of my DL folders, sorry brodie, but damned close.
judas: The Afghan Whigs - Fountain and Fairfax
I have heard this one, good song though, couldn't say it would ever be a favorite of mine, but I like the energy in it.
judas: Antony and the Johnsons - For Today I am a Boy
Sneaky vocals on this one, and simplistic piano. I like it, and the lyrics are interesting, what with the the whole transgender thing going on there... and then it builds up to a gospel like chorus. Cute, it is a maybe.
judas: Antony and the Johnsons - Hope There's Someone
Crazy set of pipes on this vocalist, like Aaron Neville, but nothing like Aaron Neville. Another big build up, this song is deeper than the one above, both have a chance at it though. I likes.
judas: The Arcade Fire - Wake Up
I have heard this as well, and yes, I do like it. It cheers me up and gets me all wanting to go to a peanut bar and throw shells on the ground, shoot bottles, and have a sing along.
catdad: Spot 1019 - Dinky Dog the Demon Master
This one didn't hit me as hard as thier other track, its funny, but the beat just goes and goes, and I lose track of it. I need to see these goofy fucks live though.
johnny: Big Wu - Two Person Chair
I have never been a fan of Big Wu, I want to be... they are local, and everyone else seems to love them. I think they are OK, the whole jam band thing just doesn't grab me like it does others. Maybe if I saw them live it would help. This song is decent, but reminds me of a TV theme song to a show that gets cancelled 3 weeks after the pilot airs.
catdad: brian vander ark - 1229 sheffield
Not bad, its simple, and I think that this guy must have been the lead singer of Verve Pipe, if not... then i think they should have a sing off. And they would both lose because they would put the judges to sleep. THough it is a decent all around song, there just isnt anything there that stands out.
Chezui23: Grand National - Drink to Moving On
This track is winning, great vocals, upbeat guitar and background noise. And the harmony works so well, sounds like the dude from Coldplay on ecstacy and donuts. Pretty, but not too mellow. I like this one, it will be tough to top, but there is plenty of time to try.
johnny: Big Wu - MInnesota Moon
Wow, these guys really should make TV theme songs, because this one is even more so than the one listed above. But this one I could see on a show that lasts a couple three seasons... but always changes out the token hot chick character because they can't find one that works. Catchy song, but still can't fall in love these guys.
catdad: james angell
I like him better this time around, I always appreciate a nice dark song with fucked up lyrics, and atmosphere sounds that are creepy as shit. And I like the way his voice trips up now and then, its nice to hear something that isn't over produced. This is a solid song. It sounds like "Bitches don't lie" though when he sings it.. funny.
chezui23 - Damian Marley-Welcome to Jamrock
Quite a few people have been pushing this kid on me, and only now have I finally given him a chance, and I like this track, ALOT. Its got just enough reggae, hip hop, dub mixture to make it not sound like the same old rip off shit that has been pushed out lately. I won't pick this song though, because I have heard of it. Still good though.
johnny: Franz Ferdinand - fabulously lazy
i like the Franz Ferdinand, and havent heard much from them... never heard this song before, and I am ok with that. Because it bothers me, the chorus. It sounds awkward. Fabulously Lazy, just sounds ugly, and the way they vocalize it sounds uglier. The whole song is a bit drab too.
catdad: king swamp - Night fall over eden
SOngs like this make me wonder... if I saw a killing scene set to this song, would I like it? In Desperado there are alot of songs I normally wouldn't appreciate, but having the essence of the scene remmebered through the song always seems to make me enjoy them. This song has no killing scene, therefore I do not dig it. It sounds pretty plain to me.
catdad: Lori Mckenna - Never Die Young
THis is a country song, and as much as I hate to be closed minded, I ussually refer to my tastes as everything but country. And though there are many exceptions to that, this song is not one of them. Its lame and makes me want to slap someone silly.
catdad: Screaming Trees - Orange Airplane
this is one of those groups that I have always heard of, but couldn't tell one of thier songs or even if they are good or not. I always assumed I wouldnt like them, but this song proves that preminition wrong, I don't love it yet, but its got energy, and I like the odd effects and goofy vocals, it rocks out wellish.
catdad: dubwar - original murder
This song is fucking annoying, yet... if this group was an opening act to a concert I was attending, I feel like I would be presently surprised. They sound like they would have alot of fire on stage, and they remind of the best parts of Urban Dance Squad and the worst parts of System of a Down... I do like it when it breaks down halfway through the song though.
catdad: solid - outside
this one is ok, i like the trip hop beat, and the lazy vocals... but it sounds a bit off, im not sure what it is, but certain elements just dont flow with me, I think the male backing vocals are kinda cheesey and the percussions don't sound very well put togethor at times. Not bad, but not super goodness either.
catdad: jennifer terran - pomegranate weed
this reminds me of the good old days, when i used to use Tori Amos, Poe, Hooverphonic and Heather Nova to get laid. Yet I secretly did enjoy thier tracks, i can't stand tori or poe now though, but this chick... she's good, strong voice and chill beats. This may end up on top, unless Portishead finally releases a new album.
Catdad: IceHouse - Not my Kind
At first listen, I am unimpressed. It sounds cheese, but I repsect it because I can tell it is old school, so I give it 6 more listens, the vocals start to stand out more "Bowie like" and the beat becomes amore infectious. It is possible this could make its way up there, but I doubt it due to the fact that it reminds me of so many other songs.
Rylie: Ghost of the Robot - Good Night Sweet Girl
This one starts out good, vocals are strong willed, simplistic beat, interesting lyrics. But then it starts to gets a bit whiney and nears EMO. BUt then ends nicely. Tough call, but likely won't make the tops.
Johnny: Jorge Ben - Ponda de Lanqa Africano
I dig this shit easy, you got your world beat, little funky beat action but not too overbearing, and chorus that sounds like a shit load of sober hippies that still enjoy life, and the makes me happy.
Judas: Hanson - Song to Sing
Talk about a coming of age story...these guys really used to suck, but atleast back then they were making money and sucking, now they just suck, and thats more respectable in my book. I wish they hadn't found this song to sing.
Catdad: Spot 1019 - The Honk
I am a sucker for devious laughing in the middle of songs, that combined with the "honk"y tonk beats, a few swear words and an insane vocalist... pure gravy. Short and sweet and rediculous, and most of all, enjoyed.
Rylie: Bleu - Watching you Sleep
If I was a girl, this song would be better. But I still like it, downtempo, charming lyrics... and knowing the reasoning behind the song helps, but not enough to sway it to favoritism. But if I was a girl...
Judas: Nina Simone - Funkier than A Mosquiters Tweeter
THis song would be an easy top shelf had you not introduced me to her in the last contest, I now own as much of her discography as possible, and this song is included in that. Great choice, but I have heard it before.
Rylie: Unknown Artist - Track 14
You need to figure out who this is cause it makes me feel pretty. Sounds like Beck was neutered and did a collab with his pre-teen neice for the Four Rooms soundtrack. I can picture Tim Roth Bouncing down the hall to this.
Honorable Mention:
Here are a few mixes I recieved from various people right before the contest started.
Judas: Oh My Goth
This is a mammoth 5 disc set icluding gothy packagineg using her fashionably glam sewing skills with fabric pockets for the discs... and if that isn't enough, I am digging it hard so far. I am 1.5 discs deep into listening, and the first disc (early years) has a shit pot of cuts that I lurve to death. But like I said, I am only 1.5 deep out of 5.
Chezui23: Copacetic Cuts
Not only do i get this, but also a dvd movie mix, and a shitpot other songs. Too big to even review, there is so much music invovled in the package he sent, i almost teared up. Haven't watched many of the movies yet, still trying to figure out how to burn on dvd to watch on the tellie, but Old Boy is on there, and I have been wanting to see that for a long time. Chezui is the sheet.
Pie: Untitled
Her first mix to me, and not bad at all, starting with an instrumental from the Lost Highway sdtrk, along with other great instrumentals and great shit inbetween, I am a proud of little Paige, she done right on this one. And I still owe her my essay review on it.
Antidote: Untitled
This mix opened me up to alot of local shit, and alot of jems I never heard before. Some of the folky music on it is hard for me to take in, but there is some Lucero on there that I am starting to dig and alot of toher cool shit that makes me feel good to be alive.
Velocity: NZ pop / NZ Rock
A New zealand sampler 2 disc set from a local minnesotan, good shit. The rock side is my favorite so far, with cuts from D4 and a bunch of other shit I have never heard before. This further proves the fact that I need to go to NZ soon!!!
Keep them coming fuckers... so you can see your name and track submitted here with my opinionated review.
