Mississippi town almost entirely destroyed by hurricane
Updated: August 31, 2005
WAVELAND, Miss. (AP) - It's a case of complete decimation in a region crushed by destruction. The Mississippi town of Waveland has been basically wiped off the map by Hurricane Katrina.
Rescue workers just reached the area today, finding shell-shocked survivors living off what they could find in the rubble.
The storm slammed through the town of 7,000 people leaving almost no structures standing. A few roofs are intact, but the homes underneath were washed away.
One survivor was living on a couple of chairs he found, covered by a piece of plastic to protect him from the sun. Rescuers said the town was filed with the smell of natural gas, broken lumber and rotting flesh.
Another summed up the situation, saying, "we're gonna be in trouble for a long time."
