So, here's the review for the Motorhead show on 3/9/05 that I've been procrastinating doing. My bud Virginia met me in South Amboy and picked me up and brought me to the Starland Ballroom. She called her bud who works the load-in and load-out and he put us on the guestlist, so we got in for free!! Once inside, we met up with our bud Mike Skodnick and proceeded to Phil's side of the stage (stage right). There were three opening bands: COC (Corrosion Of Conformity), Zeke, and another band that sucked. Zeke came on after the crappy band and fucking rocked! This was my first exposure to them and they reminded me of a combo of The Ramones (attitude-wise) and Motorhead on speed, if that's possible!! Virginia was saying that she was having a flashback to when she saw The Ramones back in the early 80's (with Marky, so very close to original line-up...fucking lucky!!). Very impressed by them, definitely picking up some of their records soon. Around this time, some dude comes up to me and is like, "yo, do you have a livejournal??" Turns out to be this dude John! He was cool as shit, we'll be hanging at some of the upcoming OverKill shows. Next up was COC who owned as well. I only knew a few of their songs from hearing them in friend's cars, high school, videos, etc., but I'm definitely glad I got to see them. I just wish I was more familiar with their material, but still headbanged relentlessly. Around 10:30, MOTORHEAD hit the stage. They all come out, the lights hit the stage, then Lemmy says, "We are Motorhead. We play Rock 'N Roll." Then they blast right into Doctor Rock and then immediately into Stay Clean. The rest might not be in the right order other than those two and the last two, but they were all played. Here's the setlist from my friend Dave's recollection:
Doctor Rock
Stay Clean
Shoot You In The Back
Love Me Like A Reptile
Over The Top
Killers
Going To Brazil
R.A.M.O.N.E.S. (dedicated to Dee Dee, Joey, Johnny, Marky, and Dimebag Darrell)
Metropolis
No Class
In The Name Of Tragedy
Sacrifice
Just 'Cuz You Got The Power Don't Mean You Got The Right
I Got Mine
Dancing On Your Grave
Iron Fist
Killed By Death
Whorehouse Blues (big fucking surprise!!! Mikkey and Phil were on acoustic guitars, while Lemmy sang and played harmonica)
Ace Of Spades
They also played about 2-3 others off of Inferno. They were supposed to close with OverKill, but Mikkey drank ice cold water extremely fast and it messed up his stomach so badly that he was in the bathroom for at least two hours after the show. Oh well, only missed one song, and Ace Of Spades was a great fucking closure.
After the show, picked up some killer shirts; the tour ones for myself and Virignia (they were OverKill green, we had to!) and I picked up an Inferno album shirt for my roommate, then we went out to the back of the venue to wait for the boys. We were outside for at least two hours before they came out, Phil being the first. In the meantime, the three of us end up shooting the shit with this guy Dave who we later find out is from the OverKill bulletin board. We survived the bitter cold with him (I think it was like 10 degrees out then, we're talking like 12:30-2:30). Finally, we see Phil (guitarist of Motorhead) in his underwear walking in the front of the bus (they had ladies on there, do the math), then about 10 minutes later, he comes out and signs everything and takes pictures. He even brought us back in the venue to escape the cold! We got the boot unfortunately when we checked on Mikkey, but then Lemmy came out. I got a business card signed by him (and Phil), tried getting a picture but all these fuckers surrounded him as soon as we were in a pose. No one really talked to him except for us; everyone just shoved things to get autographed in his face. Lemmy and myself were talking about their appearance on The Young Ones. He said "it was extremely boring and they were dull college kids; it was terribly boring." Anyways, Virginia got a pic with him and us and Skodnick got pics with Phil, so it was cool. After Lemmy left, Phil came back and gave us the rundown about Mikkey and that he was doing a lot better. He was inquiring about bars in the area, and since Virginia used to live in South Amboy, she gave him some names. After leaving around 3:30, we went to Denny's on Route 18 and hung out there for a while. After that, Virginia was soo kind enough to drive me back to school, getting back around 5 and in bed by 5:30...poor thing didn't even get home until 5:30ish. All in all, a great fucking night!!
