Turns out that my hand will not require surgery! It's healing much, much better than we'd expected. On the flipside, it tuns out that one of my ribs is broken. I woke up Monday with increased rib pain and ordered up another chest x-ray when I went in for my latest hand consult. I must've had a very small fracture that we missed in the original x-rays and more than likely just opened it up rolling over in my sleep Sunday night. Yikes.
I'll spend another week in my current cast. Then it'll be removed, the hand numbed and all the fingers uncurled to stretch out the ligaments. Then a new cast for two weeks at which time I should be able to move to a single finger splint. PT should begin in about a month.
In the meantime, everyone at the shop has been extremely supportive -- everything from car rides, to cash, not to mention letting me show up each day to "work" so I can keep the paychecks coming in.
My left-handed skills are improving, brushing my teeth and wiping my ass remaining the most awkwardly excecuted tasks. Raymond Carver would have loved these last two weeks.
