It is annoying me greatly that as soon as the press publish the fact that a record number of people have complained about something, suddenly EVERYONE has to complain, and the numbers go through the roof.
I have few comments to make as to whether the complaints were valid as i don't watch the show in question [ although i hear both my daughter and my collegues talking about it all the time]
However one of the points that have been raised have had me wondering.
When does a cultural difference become racism?
One of my friends has been clear that she would not consider marrying a man who wasn't of the same backgound as her because of the problems it would cause within her community and her worries that they would have intrinsically different values.
Does this make her racist?
She has friends of many different cultures and skin colours, and makes her judgements based on a persons personality not their skin colour /accent/homeland.
But for a relationship to last she feels that there are certain things that are so important for her and her propective husband to agree on that this person can only be found within a similar community to her own.
And i look at myself.
Again, i make my friends from people that think like me and who i admire.
Someone asked me recently if i had any frinds who were a different race to me.
And i couldn't tell them immediately.
I had to shufle them in my head because I don't classify my friends that way.
If they had asked if i had any friends who were funny/gorgeous/musical/artistic I bring them to mind immediately, but by race or colour....i had to think.
And wonder why they were asking.
After all, how do you prove that you AREN'T racist?
*sigh*
