"Im fucking sick of people treating Asians and Asian culture as a joke. Were not here for your entertainment. Asians dont generally face the same brand of racism that African Americans or Hispanics might, and in that sense were lucky. I dont generally have to worry about being attacked because of my race, and Im thankful for that. But lets be clear racism towards Asians is still a very real thing. When you make jokes about the food I eat, thats racist. When you joke about me bringing dishonor to my family by not earning an A in class, thats racist. When you speak gibberish to me or speak to me in that idiotic Asian accent, thats racist. When you qualify me as your Asian friend or refer to me as Asian rather than use my name, thats racist. When you replace the names of people who died in a plane crash with Sum Ting Wong, Wi Tu Lo, Ho Lee Fuk, and Bang Ding Ow, that is fucking racist. Do not think youre being funny. Do not think youre making a harmless joke. Youre making a farce of a rich culture and disrespecting Asians everywhere. And this isnt being acknowledged nearly as much as it should be. Yes, there are worse things going on. Violent acts are committed against people of color every day. But dont forget this. Dont ignore this. Just because ridicule is nonviolent doesnt mean it isnt harmful. Its demeaning. We arent a joke. We arent here to make you laugh. Were people, and we deserve respect. I dont find anything funny about that."
