*Setting: An American Midwest university campus dining hall. The time is approximately 11:30 AM, and the hall is nearly vacant considering that this is a Sunday morning. The sandwich bar and its workers Piyoz and Keith have seen not a single
customer all morning. The mood: lethargic.*
(Girl approaches sandwich bar.)
(Piyoz, on the other side of the glass, turns to take her order.)
(Girl looks at the bar.)
Girl: "I don't want a sandwich."
(Girl walks away.)
(Piyoz gives a vacant expression.)
*scene*
About an hour later
*Another girl approaches the bar. She's white, young, too tan, and painfully blond. Her hangover is palpable.*
Girl: "Can I get one on white bread?"
Piyoz: "Yeah." *grabs white bread.*
Girl: "Roast turkey."
*Piyoz reaches for the roast turkey before him.*
Girl: "That's not the roast turkey."
Piyoz: "Um, yes it is."
Girl: "No, that's the hickory smoked turkey."
Piyoz: "I'm pretty sure that's roasted."
Girl: "I know what the smoked looks like; I work here."
Piyoz: "Yeah, me too."
Girl: "That's totally not roasted. It's smoked."
Piyoz: "I took it our of the package this morning. It said roasted."
*silence*
Piyoz: "Alright, I'll take your word for it." *He grabs two slices of roast turkey.*
*scene*
Soon afterward...
*Another girl approaches the sandwich bar. She is talking on her cell phone, or rather, listening to someone talk without getting a word in.*
*Piyoz waits.*
*The girl is still on the phone.*
*Piyoz grabs a sheet of wax paper on which he will make a sandwich.*
Girl (to phone): "Yeah, I know he di'int. He tellin' me he di'int but I think he lyin'. He musta cuz he di'int text me this mo-nin'. He lyin' to me!"
*Piyoz waits for girl to finish her conversation.*
Girl (to passerby): "Hey, girl! Wazzup? How was the party last night?"
*Girl walks away from the bar.*
*Piyoz tosses a glance to Keith, who rolls his eyes.*
*scene*
Shortly after 1PM...
Piyoz (to customer): "What can I get you?"
Guy: "Can I get some roast beef and ham?"
*Piyoz hands him two slices of each.*
*Guy stares at him.*
Guy: "Like on bread?"
Piyoz (shakes head): "Oh. What kind of bread."
Guy (looks at list of breads): "Um.....wheat bread."
Piyoz (after some hesitation): "What kind of wheat bread?"
Guy: "Huh?"
Piyoz: "Bread is made of wheat. It's like asking for a pool with water or a car with wheels. Can you be more specific?"
Guy (analyzes the list): "Um....whole grain bread."
Piyoz: "That I have."
*scene*
About 1:45PM...
*Piyoz finishes a sandwich and realize that the next person in line in his periferal vision is really his friend Katie.*
Piyoz: "Oh hey, Katie!"
Katie (smiles): "Hey!"
*Keith makes her a sandwich. Katie takes quick glimpses of Piyoz in his apron and hat. Piyoz notices.*
*Piyoz works on a tortilla wrap as he thinks about Katie and how his room mate Jacob met her at a cherry blossom festival when she was making origami and wearing a Kingdom Hearts hat. She gave him her number and Jacob was freaking out since
he never gets girls' numbers. Later they were all hanging out and Jacob and Katie seem to get along really well. But Katie likes to text Piyoz a lot, too, and sometimes she comes over when Jacob is gone and Piyoz and Katie hang out and talk about
things. Katie really likes Piyoz's art and thinks his screenplay is really good except for the corny monologues. Katie exresses how much she likes his art and how she enjoys his company, much more than Piyoz thinks is normal. But the thing is, Jacob kind of has a thing for her. He's trying to girlfriend-ize her, which is fine, but Katie seems to like Piyoz a lot. Everytime they get together they are able to have interesting, existential discussions about religion and politics and movies and life but he doesn't want to date her. He just wants to live his life on his own terms and draw comics and write stories and go to China and make sandwiches OH CRAP THE SANDWICH*
*Keith hands Katie her sandwich.*
Katie: "See ya later, Piyoz!"
Piyoz: "Later, Katie!"
*scene*
Toward the end of the shift...
Keith: "Did you hear what I said to that girl earlier?"
Piyoz: "Which one?"
Keith: "The one with the brown hair. The one who was talking to me about how she'd miss me when I left."
Piyoz: "I wasn't really listening. You know her?"
Keith: "No, I just see her here every weekend. I make her sandwich every Sunday and she just recognizes. I told her I'm graduating next semester and she said she'll be sad when I'm gone. Then I said that 'yeah I'll be sad, too'. Then I laughed frantically like an idiot."
Piyoz: "Oh."
Keith: "Yeah, I'm real awkward with people."
Piyoz: "Join the club."
*scene*
I really don't get paid enough to do my job.
Oh and I made some art.
A guy from one of my classes saw my comics and wanted me to do this one idea he had. Don't blame me for the content. Here it is.
Another friend of mine, with whom I share a mutual admiration for the film Paprika wanted me to draw my interpretation of a leader of the lunacy parade if there were one. I think the second one turned out nicer, though:
The black-and-white version.
The version with value added. Usually it doesn't turn out this well.
Also this because it's pretty.
I'm thinking of becoming more active on this site. Lemme tell you, SG is much cooler than most of the internet, mostly because all the bronies and trolls can't pay for subscription. If you're reading this, I love you passionately.
