While Reading The Hallows
I sat alone in the last car of the train
Hunched over Deathly Hallows
Headphones on
Not so much for the purpose of listening to music
More so to complete the Leave-Me-The-Hell-Alone air I take on when I commute
One stop into my trip the doors open and a woman, her husband, & their child got on
They settled themselves towards the other end of the car
I watched them sit and returned to my book
Baby! Hey Baby!
I looked in their direction and removed half of my headphones
I raised my eyebrows doing my best to communicate without speaking, waiting to see what she had to say before I spoke
Baby, what chapter are you up to?
I looked down at the cover of my book and turned back to page I was holding with my thumb and smiled
Chapter nineteen
And you started it yesterday?
Yes, ma'am
Holy shit!
She turned to her husband
Kid reads faster than a motherfucker
He laughed and shook his head
I smiled
Gotta read this one fast before someone ruins it for me. Luckily the book is big enough that if someone does ruin it for me I can just beat them to death with it
They laughed
I hear you, she said. I gotta wait until Monday to pick one up. If someone ruins it me before then I swear I'll knife 'em
Her husband smiled again and nodded
I couldn't help but laugh
Anyway, baby, we'll let you get back to your book
Thanks
I returned the headphones to my ears
Baby! Baby!
I took my headphones off again
What's up?
It's good, right?
I smiled
Yeah, it is
Good
She waved we away with the back of her hand
Keep readin'. Keep readin'.
I put my headphones back on and returned to my reading
The train slowed and the doors opened
They stood, collected their son, and walked towards the doors, which opened onto an empty platform
They stepped off and the husband & child started to climb the stairs
Stand clear of the closing doors, please
The bell sounded and the doors started to closed
The woman stepped back towards the doors and held them open, leaning back into the car
Enjoy the book, baby
I looked up and smiled again
She released the doors and joined her family on the stairs
They waived to me
I waived back as the train pulled from the station
