Ladies & Gentlemen...Neon Diarrhea
I think the last time I performed on a stage was April '98
Actually
It may not have been a stage
It may have been in a backyard
Or in the corner of someones living room
Or maybe it was in a garage somewhere
Not sure really
But anyway
Tomorrow, for the first time in over 8 years I will be getting up in front of people and performing
Not too sure what's going to happen either
In terms of nerves that is
I'll either be totally calm
Relaxed
Or I'll revert back to twitchy, Shaky Hands Mike
Playing every song at triple speed
Unable to hold onto a pick
The first show I ever played
I think I was 16
At Hammerhedz in Hempstead
Or was it in Elmont?
I don't remember
Anyway
We had 2 songs
One was an Ice Cube cover
And no band name
We were asked to play only because no other bands showed up for the show
The sound guy asked us what we were called
We were joking around about band names earlier
And the only one that stuck out was Neon Diarrhea
Partly because I was watching a lot of Beavis & Butthead and I thought the word diarrhea was hysterical (and I still do)
And partly because I had to look up the spelling of diarrhea (and I still do)
So for that first show
That was our name
We got on stage
My hands were shanking so much that I couldn't hold my pick
I played without it and ripped one of my nails in half in the process
I've never been comfortable playing in front of people
When I was younger I took violin lessons
My relatives would come over and want to hear me play
I would go in a closet and crack the door open and play in the dark
If they spoke or clapped while I was playing I would immediately fuck up
That's what I thought about during the Hammerhedz show
I tried to keep my eyes closed
Opening them only to peek at my fingers when something I was playing didnt sound right
That was the first show
I've gotten a little better since
I can even open my eyes now
And tomorrow is the first show with a new band
If you're around tomorrow
Come down and check us out
