While there aren't any "spoilers" in my rant/review of Rob Zombie's Halloween, you may not want to know ANYTHING about the movie before you see it. If so, jump to the bottom for my final summation.
I went and saw Rob Zombie's Halloween "Re-Imagining" today. Honestly, it wasn't half bad. I went into this expecting the worst, but hoping for the best. While it was far from a perfect movie, it had the spirit of the original. Some of the last few scenes of the film were almost shot-for-shot duplicates from the original, but didn't feel like cheap rip-offs. Overall, I got what I wanted out of the movie. At the very least, this was a big "FUCK YOU" to all of those piece of shit PG-13 studio "horror" movies with the cast of the OC getting into some scary hijinks for 90 of the most gut wrenchingly awful minutes of your life. This was fucking BRUTAL. Michael Myers was a big monstrous scary fucking killing machine by the end of this thing.
Yes, I had my problems with some of it. I never really cared WHY Michael Myers turned into a monster. In fact, the simple back story made him even more frightening. When there is NO reason for him to be killing people, no motive, no agenda, it means that NOBODY is safe. He'll kill any schmuck off the street as quickly as one of his family members. That's terrifying!!!! Although, I kind of got what Rob was trying to do by showing how Michael was turned into this thing by his tormented childhood. Plus, after Mikey snaps, he IS the Michael Myers from the past. He kills EVERYBODY who steps in front of him. It just takes a little while for him to get to that . Also, the ending of the movie is just lame. It ended and then they did the typical "Last minute scare" thing...but it just kept going. They just drew the thing out too long. It ended alright, then they just pushed it a little too far. STUPID.
I've been reading nothing but bad things about this movie. "It's not the same as Halloween", "It doesn't follow the same storyline as the original" or "THIS FUCKING SUCKS!!!" . So to all of those critics who said these things , I say...piss off. Give the guy a fucking break. He tried to do something different with an old character. Yes, Michael Myers has become a horror movie icon and is up there in the pantheon of super slashers with Jason and Freddy. Yes, John Carpenter's original Halloween is a masterpiece of horror cinema and some might claim was the very first movie to kick off the slasher craze of the 80's. Okay. I agree with those things. Now if everybody else will agree with me that of the, what is it now, eight or nine Halloween movies, only about three of them were even worth half a shit. Nobody was calling for those director's heads though. This movie is actually decent if you give it a shot. It will deliver on most of the things that you want from a Halloween movie. Don't go in with the original movie fresh in your mind or you will probably be disappointed. Go into it as if it were a completely different movie and a different character and it's a fairly solid slasher flick.
To sum up. I actually liked it. It's NOT the original, but it's pretty good. Check it out for yourself and give it a fair chance.
