... So there I was, half way between going up and coming down, and all she could say was "More."
I was lashed & tied, slashed & tired, lathered & wired, licked & bitten. I was ripped and torn, battered and worn, mangled, bruised, kicked & bleeding. And all she could say was "More."
I ran, I climbed, I carried oceans of weight. I lifted rivers, sang in whispers, and wrote untold volumes for her. I did what I dared not, pushed where I knew was unsound, and ran when every moment the cracking ice raced me to the other side. And still she wanted More.
In quiet calm I cried. I confessed the truth and lies. I showed her the pictures in my head unfit for light or man. But to this she beckoned "More."
So I drove forth the sea into an angry rage, and I called the sky into fury. Every beast and bird of wing encircled, and the air was a whirlwind of cacophony. The gates of heaven and hell poured forth and the host of angels amassed to attest to her glory. Trumpets blared as every wall and stone was shaken to its pith and core. Lightning from my fingers burned her name in flaming testament on the golden path between us. And at the peak of this majesty I called for all to be hushed and still for chance that she might utter the word. And every angel hovered light, and every calf and lamb held it's breath, and ever spider in every gossamer web listened with all of it's heart to hear...
And, looking down, her face was wet with tears. And her golden hair was a cascade around it flowing. And when she looked up, all the Universe paused; every heart held aloft in the hope of the moment. And she looked into my eyes, her lips a perfect velvet bow. And she looked into my eyes, and I could feel the beating in my chest like the drum of a madman drunk on wine. And she looked into my eyes, and all else faded into descent, and she said,
"Can you do no more?"
In heavy breath I whispered "No. I can do no more"
And her tears now were streaming. "Then what more do you have left to offer?"
"Only my heart and my hands, and the love of a lifetime."
And she smiled through her fingers and looked up for a moment at the swirling sky around us. "I suppose ... that will be enough."
And with silent smiling sighs, the crowd disbanded, each back to their hole or hovel or home, dancing and falling, flying and crawling, until it was yet again just we two, standing alone on a path of gold.
"What do we do now?" she bade through her sniffles and tears.
"This path must go somewhere. Let's see where this goes."
...
And thus began my descent into the unknown...
