I miss the 80s sometimes...
During the summer of 1984 I was regularly harassed by cops in the Bowery, merely for my funny clothes. I loved this song then.
Summer in NYC meant Carver Ice Cream and their greatest creation Cookie Puss. In the 83, the Beastie Boys immortalized it on their first rap song, "Cookie Puss." I hated them then. Now I own all their CDs and fondly remember riding the subway with them.
White English guys should not rap, not in the 80s and not now. Captain Sensible was neither a Captain nor sensible, but this was such a fun song to sing. I love this piece:
"Once a lifetime twice a day
If you don't work you get no pay
I've been to the east I been to the west
But the girls I like most are the ones undressed
Well hello Adam where you been
I said stand aside 'cos I'm a- feeling mean
I had a gut full of you and I'm a- feeling bad
But you're an ugly old potterer and ain't I glad"
You could not get away from Crazy Eddie's commercials in all of the NYC channels particularly channel 5, before Fox, and my favorite channel 11 which carried the Yankee games and the Little Rascals right after school.
In 1983, I saw the Circle Jerks in concert. The highlight of the show was when my dad walked into the club and pulled me and my friend Joshua out of the club because it was after our curfew and we were at a bar. He had to buy a ticket to get in.
Joshua's brother was friends with a young comic, Eddie Murphy. We did not believe it until we saw them walk down the streets of Corona heading to Corona Ice's. They had the best Italian Ices there. I wonder if they are still there. Lusyd and I drove by there not long ago but I forgot to look.
I did not listen to just punk. XTC was and still is my favorite band. They are what The Beatles would have been if they had been 15 years younger.
In 1984, the greatest football team Liverpool FC beat AS Roma on penalties for the European Club. I thought I was the only kid in NYC that was jumping up for joy when they won. Little did I know that "you will never walk alone."
