I went to the Rock the Bells concert on Sat. with my friend, Heather
.
I must say it was kickin rad. Some great guest apperances by Phife from ATCQ, DJ Kool, and Lauren Hill.
We got there late, but just in time to catch the ass end of Del the funky homosapien's performance. And with Del, whether it's 5 mins or 20 mins, it's going to be awesome. That was earlier in the day so we were able to still get pretty close to the stage as you can see.
.
Next up was Immortal Technique I think followed by Dilated Peoples...or maybe it was vice versa.
Now seeing as how we got there around 3-3:30 and the concert was going til at least midnight, it was necessary to make bathroom trips and drink and food stops. Every time we the crowded stage area and came back for the next act after being rested, we ended up farther back naturally. It still didn't diminish from the experience, though if I had the stamina and could just piss on the ground where I stand, I probably would've stayed up front for the energy and the vibe. Because coming up was none other then an onslaught of hip-hop gods. Oh yah. Did I mention the whole thing was hosted by Supernatural? Yahhh.
Aesop Rock rocked the house, shortly there after followed by De La Soul. Then came Redman (which DJ Kool guested with), and Talib Kwali. And everybody knows Talib and Mos Def go hand in hand so even though they were scheduled as two seperate performances, Mos Def came out during Talib's set then finished it up on his own. After Mos Def came the Lauren Hill appearance.
Now here's the only thing that dissapointed me. The whole show was running behind schedule and we were getting super tired from standing and toolin around the site for, oh, 9 and 1/2 hours. It was a big debate on whether or not we could even stay and then safely drive home afterwards w/o falling asleep at the wheel. Unfortunaly, we decided it would be safest to leave, so we missed the final Wu-Tang performance (minus ODB. They gave him a tribute during the show). It made me sad in my soul because I wanted more then anything to see the Wu live, but we just couldn't endure. We could hear them starting as we were walking back to the car.
I was just pissed that they put in delay after delay after Mos Def. A 1/2 hour of waiting with the in between act group Soul Elevation (entertaining as they were, I was tired of them and just wanted to see Wu), and then a 1/2 hour of Lauren Hill (nice surprise), and then basically 15-20 mins of just waiting for them to break down the band equip and setup stage for Wu-Tang. By then we were ready to go.
All in all, it was totally worth going. If they do this again next year, I'm so fucking there.
Oh ya. Also, this guy was there
sporting huge, rad hair. Go you, guy!
