School (UNC-Chapel Hill) is fairly insane. I-N-S-A-N-E. Just over 20 hours of classes and labs each week, most of them with weekly quizzes or assignments. I'm hitting the initial exam phase, leaving very little time to go out and have fun.
So last Saturday I went out and had fun, in the form of the Dirge Factory's Temptation night, a sort of goth-fetish gathering they hold every couple of months. If my Patho exam suffered for it, so be it! I'm waiting for my grade, but I did well enough. And I passed my first skills evaluation yesterday with flying colors (measuring vital signs, sterile gloving, etc.), which has me in a damn good mood. And Coraline got a great review at the Onion, so I need to see that.
Of course, two more exams next week, so lots of hitting the books ahead.
For those not keeping score, this is nursing school, which means it's 8 guys and 95+ girls. This is very good in obvious ways, and charmingly awkward in others. I've met some very neat people though. It's a tough program to get into; for every one accepted, two qualified applicants are turned down. So most of my fellow students are very bright or very good at faking it. It's a diverse lot, with some students even older than I am, and I'm finally getting used to it all.
But damn, the first couple weeks, wow. My blood pressure went through the roof; my TA's eyes widened when she did a reading. It was so cute! And then I set a doctor's appt. It hasn't helped that in addition to the workload, my lab partner is jaw droppingly beautiful (and single, and in age range). Instant overwhelming crush, heh. It's taken some getting used to, but fortunately I have 10,000 other things to keep my mind on.
There's not much time to enjoy life, and it's going to be like this until May 2010. Even when I spend time with the gang, school is involved. As people arrived for the Super Bowl party they got their blood pressures and pulses checked, and then I went home to study. I hear it was a great game!
But it's what I signed up for, and in the end will be a good thing. Cheers,
