First off, to any and all effected by the hurricane, my thoughts and prayers are with you.
I have to say, the images of devastation on TV have had a sobering effect Perhaps even more so because they are still so much more sterilized than many of the horror stories you can read in the print media.
Whatever the case, I am now more certain than ever that I do not want to live in L.A. anymore. The mere thought of a catastrophe hitting this city has become all the more terrifying. New Orleans is a quaint little berg compared to the City of Angels.
I shudder to even think
But I gotta say, I dont think Ive ever seen an act of God so politicized so quickly. A lot of it has gone beyond mere political opportunism and into the realm of... eh, I dont have a word lowly enough to describe it.
Yes, we all hate Bush. Maybe the National Guard could have been deployed faster. Maybe, had the levee been up to snuff, lives could have been saved. But what about the countless state and city officials who never pre-coordinated an evacuation plan, knowing full-well that they were serving a coastal city, BLOW SEA LEVEL mind you, in an area prone to hurricanes? What about the bureaucrats who sat around debating precautions, repairs and improvements rather than acting?
All of that is said not to excuse or persecute anyone, but rather to remind people that political finger-pointing is never going to change the fact that, at the end of the day, if Mother Nature so decides, tens of thousands, indeed millions, of human beings can be wiped out in the blink of an eye. Its just that simple.
I just want the politicians, talking heads, spinsters, celebrity activists and all the rest to shut the fuck up, put down their fingers, and simply encourage people to keep sending money and supplies the victims way.
OK, thats my rant for the week.
Anyway, all and all, things are good. Im still writing up a storm and the critiques have been very positive thus far. Its a little weird writing for others as you cant just insert any old character, plot device or twist that pops into your head. But again, so far, my masters have been very agreeable to pretty much all my ideas.
And PERHAPSEVIL has managed to put up with my well, my less-than-sunny demeanor. Whenever Im in writing mode I dont think about much else and can be rather moody, but she hasnt tried to kill me... yet.
Friday night we did a whole lot of drinkin with one of her coworkers. It finally ended in some karaoke bar in some bowling alley with P.E. and her sister rescuing the poor girl from a under a bathroom stall after shed heaved the contents of her stomach.
Saturday I did a bit of work
Sunday we went to the 13th Annual Civil War days in Huntington Beach. Theres nothing like the roar of antiquated cannons as hundreds of men in period costumes fight their way through thick clouds of black powder smoke. Needless to say, I enjoyed myself thoroughly.
And I was damn tempted to write a harsh letter to the editor of the OC Weekly. You see, thats the free rag that they hand out at coffee houses and other pseudo-intellectual hipster hangouts to promote concerts and the like. Anyway, the girl given the job of doing the write-up for the reenactment felt the need to editorialize, insinuating that the only people interested in such a thing are slack-jawed yokels who long for the days of slavery.
Now I realize that within any group you can find bad apples, but its been my experience that historical re-enactors, be they Civil War, Colonial, Frontier or Renaissance, are among the most intelligent, well-read people you will ever meet. Theyre just geeks who obsess over history rather than Star Trek or at least trade off from one weekend to the next.
Anyhoo, that night me and the evilish one hit unraveled and MisterSatan's party. A good time was had, though I was even less talkative than usual as I was silently freaking out. I was two days away from a deadline and still hadnt done a lick of work. Founately inspiration struck the next morning and I got the work done in about three hours time, leaving the rest of the day to veg, eat and watch movies.
Anyway, thats it for now. I swear Im gonna take time to get around and say hey later this week That is if anyone is still actually reading.
Hope all is well in your playground.
