Finally saw The New World on Saturday. Great flick! I was especially happy that it wasn’t another “greedy white men stole the Indian’s land” diatribe, but was instead a portrait of characters we’ve all heard of, but who we probably don’t really understand. It’s not a movie about who was right or wrong, but simply what happened and the courage that it took to live in that day and age.
…Though to be fair, the movie relies so heavily on visuals rather than dialogue, it’s a bit like a Rorschach test; different people will come away with impressions. …For example, I thought it was great, but P.E. thought it was intolerably boring.
But the highlight of the weekend was giving P.E.’s lil’ cat Brody a bath. In all my years on this Earth, that was the first time I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing the comedy of a kitty cleansing first-hand. It’s a downright cartoonish endeavor; all four legs braced against the edges of the sink, desperately trying to stay out of the water. Then the incessant twitching as he tried to dry himself… Hilarity!
Yeah, I’m easily amused…
Oh! If you can get a hold of a copy, see THE CALL OF CTHULU. Very cool! It adapts the old Lovecraft short story in the style of a 20’s silent film and succeeds surprisingly well.
It makes me wonder, as we plunge into the new digital age of moviemaking, if old filmmaking aesthetics will become styles in and of themselves. Sky Captain hinted at this, but was still very much a modern visual orgy. Cthulu is much more tempered in that it truly looks like a product of the silent era. Granted the picture is sharper and cleaner than anything that has survived from the 20’s and there are a few tell-tale signs of digital effects work, but on the whole it’s a nice little forgery.
OK, that's it for now...

Love the pictures with the kitty. AWWWW.

Ahhh yes, kitty bathing...I've been through the trauma myself, shredded arms r us! I wouldn't even attempt it with mums cat, I would die a painful death.
