I'm really digging the sax. The drumming is in a bit of a rut. My hand speed is improving, but I find myself playing the same things over and over again in fills and solos. I'm concentrating a BIT more on rudiments and fundamentals, and having a hell of a good time playing both saxophones.
I played the guitar for years - doing jazz guitar rather than rock or blues is a bit challenging, getting the hands into the various shapes and getting the blue notes in. I've no intention of playing like Joe Pass or Emily Remler, just doing enough to fill in with some chords that aren't barre chords. Bass, well, it's strung like a guitar, played that for years, NP. Walking bass will be a fun tricky pastime, but it's nothing I can't handle.
But the sax, now there's something where I leverage the recorder playing I did as a kid. It's strange - it's like discovering a third dimension to play with, musically. Drums are horizontal, guitar/bass is vertical, and the sax is like the Z-axis.
I think I'll start to favor the sax over the guitar, with the drums first and foremost, of course.
