George bush Jr. is a fuckwit.
This should come as no revelation to anyone. It seems that his belief in faith-based initiatives to solve social ills also extends to military endeavours. With bellicose tones of bravado safe and sound behind the iron gates on the South Lawn, or from Carrier decks in the mid-Atlantic, he seems to enjoy flaunting American Power, somehow believing in it's omniscience. But no power is ever omniscient. I understand that. I don't understand why he does not.
I saw a young man pulled to the ground today and about five guys literally saw off his head over the course of 40 seconds or so with a 7 inch blade today. They were all chanting "God is great" as they did it. They were all wearing masks. It seems that they understand that their power is not omniscient, and take precautions to ensure their safety. I understand their rage; I understand their motivations. I do not understand why they invoke God's name in the carrying out of their murder. I can't imagine a God who takes sides in the affairs of men. From Holy Wars to Manifest Destiny... now it's Radical Islamic Jihad and Right Wing Evangelicals fighting wars of "Good vs. Evil" and asserting "my God is greater." Geopolitics I understand. The belief in some Ecclesiastically divined sanction for wholesale murder and destruction I do not.
I remember being told that Saddam Hussein had chemical and biological weapons programs that were a threat to us. Once experts inside our many beaurocracies came out and said that the stockpiles we supplied were of little use anymore due to their relatively short shelf life, I remember hearing about the yellow-cake Uranium that British officials had discovered. Once those in the know came out and said this was not the case, I remember being told that we had to do this to back up the United Nations' authority. Once the United Nations came down and said that they wanted the inspections process to continue, I remember being told that this would be in the best interests of promoting our most holy of beliefs: Democracy. Once it was clear that nearly all the populations of Europe to include the overwhelming majority of Britons, Germans and Francs, were opposed to an attack on Iraq, I remember hearing that those countries that listened to their populace (*kind of the cornerstone of Democracy here...) were "Old Europe" and perhaps not so significant. Tony Blair, who went against the wishes of his countrymen was deemed "America's most valuable friend" and together we went off to promote the Democracy that we cherish so well.
I remember hearing "Saddam Hussein is an evil man" who gassed his own people. I know that the U.S. gave him not only the chemical agents but the meteorological information that day to carry it out most effectively.
I'm not sure what that makes us.
I know about the tens of Millions of dollars we're giving to the monarchy in Uzbekistan for the use of airbases there. Providing money to a government where the punishment for speaking ill of that same monarchy is being boiled alive, while we engage in what was at the latter stages framed as a war against the evils of totalitarianism and barbarism.
I think I do know what that makes us.
President Bush has stated for the record, "I don't do nuance." I don't understand how he can make such a claim. His supporters call him a man of conviction and a man of principle, but if that's the case, I just have to say that judging from his actions and situationaly-dependent stances his convictions and principles have to be the most nuanced
of any leader in quite some time.
His administration has blown the cover of CIA operatives intentionally. His administration has consistently misled and lied to the American public in matters of material and mortal concern. In the "war" to defend us against those who "hate our freedom" he has curtailed our civil liberties, expanded government surveillance, police powers and usurped sizeable swaths of power from the Judiciary, effecitively restructuring the balance of powers inside our own system which was designed if one recalls, ultimately. "For, Of and By the People." His "leadership" seems to consist entitely of tired cliche's not even suitable for the worst of movies. He's thrown 130,000 troops into a political endeavour that is impossible to acheive through military means without losing... and even then, is most likely acheivable only to our detriment.
Once upon a time I was a political junkie. I spent over six years studying Poltical Theory, politics, poltical philosophy, public administration and the like. These days I can't even stomach the stuff. And it's not because I'm no longer interested in policy, or because I've lost interest in the affairs that shape our world. It's mainly because it fucking depresses me to see one administration... one person. fuck it up so bad, in such horrible, impeachable and sometime even treasonous ways while everyone else sits around and does nothing. Politics has trumped Policy to a degree that I am no longer even remotely comfortable with. The drive of Ego has surpassed the common sense quotients. Ideologies reign supreme and incredibly few in power seem to be asking the questions anymore, where did they come from or are they even rational? Are they workable?
My luck at predicting electoral outcomes is about on par with my ability to predict the Stanley Cup Playoffs. But I hope like hell that Bush gets sent back to Texas this year. If not, then the Democrats have to take back both houses of Congress and check his ass because if they don't, I don't even want to know how bad he can fuck up in another four years. If neither happens, then the absolute only thing I can hope for is to learn somehow that I was completely and utterly wrong.
