super bowl sunday back in 2011 was the worst day of my life. two days before, i had ended a relationship with a woman that i loved dearly that just liked me. i was unemployed. but my steelers were playing and i was having a couple of friends over for a party. plus i had a job interview a few days before. so i was hopeful. i woke up to a phone call from my dad. my grandmother had past away in the night. i was going to drive up monday after the super bowl to be a pallbearer.
so, i went about my day. i put on a happy face and met some friends to play a little touch football before the big game. it was a good distraction. my team was actually winning. then there was a broken play that resulted in a pass that was up for grabs. i had a good bead on it, playing defense, and went for the interception. so did one of my teammates.
we collided and i was a little dazed as a result, but i managed to get off the field to gather myself. i told a friend i wasn't feeling well and i was going home. i drove...
i have no idea what the next three hours contained. apparently, i got home, dropped my keys and this started the cycle. after the third time of asking the same five questions, my new roommate called some friends. they called my dad, then they took me to the hospital.
next thing i remember, my buddy hands me a piece of paper. it read, before you ask a question: no you don't have a job or insurance, yes, you and lauren broke it off, your grandmother died this morning, someone picked up the chicken wings, we cancelled your party, and they keep asking you to put on the gown...
i was in the hospital the next two days with a class three concussion. i was unable to drive to PA to say goodbye to my grandmother. and, the steelers lost the game...
yesterday, i got a call from my dad. my grandfather was burning trash when an old rug fell out of the burning barrel and caught the grass around him on fire. things rapidly got out of control and my aunt looked over just in time to see his legs go up in flames.
now, he is in the lehigh valley burn unit. and 86 year old diabetic korean war vet and widow. with 3rd degree burns to 22% of his body. he goes in tomorrow to see if they can start doing skin grafts.
my head is swimming. i am preparing myself like i was unable to for the passing of my grandmother. fingers crossed, prayers, whatever. time will tell...
