"Uncommon Valor was a common Virtue" These words were spoke by Admiral Nimitz, directed towards the Marines of Iwa Jima. These last couple of days haven't been that good for me mentally.
I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on August 21 2001 right after High School. On September of that same year our nation was attacked. I often ponder would I have joined if I wasn't already in. But that wasn't an issue, the issue was to defend our country just like those brave souls did countless times in the past. In June of that same year I was given an honorable discharge for Medical reasons. I had tried to commit suicide on numerous occasions. Some of you may think that it was the cowards way out. Hell I did for a long time as did most of the senior officers in my platton. They had such high hopes for me. Basically I had issues going in, that noone knew about, I still deal with these demoms to this day. I probally will for the rest of my life.
I have heard now that the President has decided that all Marine Personal will have to extend another year into there current contract.
Say what you will about the WMD's the speech, 9/11 and the war in Iraq. All this is taken into consideration. However I still belive in the current leader of this nation. I may not belive all of his decions....that would be foolish if I did. I do think that he has, to a certain degree been villlinaized and I know for a fact that he has done more for the Armed Forces then the last President. If you disagree that's fine just do it tactfully please. "bush sucks" is not educated or tactful.
I've been to 3 Millitary funerals since I've been back home. Not because I had to because I felt that they would have done the same for me. Some of these men I served with. Some of them I just knew. All of them I cared about. These men brave so much and have so little but just don't give a shit....they really do love this country when asked if they'd do it again. An emphatic "yes". Then I hear how Britney Spears (or whoever) dosen't have enough shampoo and her life is soooooo bad.....please for the love of christ.
I often wonder and fell quilty that AI didn't go to Iraq or Afghanastan, I wonder what I would have done out there. Hopefully the right thing. Would I have died no questions asked like some of the great heros of our nation. Maybe that wasn't for me to decide.
This post is dedicated to everyone past present and future that has served, knows someone, has a brother or famially member in the armed service. Your sacrafice will not go unnoticed.
I still consider myself a Marine. I did earn that. However I did not earn my own respect. That's for another day though.
To every Marine that reads this Semper FI
To all others next time you run out of staples and think that rough think of the men and women over there
God Bless The United States.
