Two interesting things to mention. First, today I was testing my connection speed to see how it was doing. I was rather irritated when I found that I was only getting around 800kbps from pcpitstop. A different bandwidth tester that uses local data center servers (from the same state as me) was showing me 1.2mbps. Even so, that wasn't fast enough for me. I'm supposed to get up to 3mbps from my current cable deal. So, obviously my connection wasn't holding up its end of the bargain.
Deciding to look into what may be wrong from my end before bitching out Comcrap, I decided to check out pcpitstop's free trial optimize thing. Basically, this will tell you how it would optimize your system should you be willing to pay the 30 bucks to buy the stupid software. Me being a bit of a cheapskate and pcpitstop being dumb enough to tell me what registry hacks I should make (including, rather kindly, the specific registry keys I should edit and values I should add) I decided to whip out regedt32.exe (the winNT version of regedit) and get to work.
Using the pcpitstop optimizer, keeping track of all changes, and using the microsoft.com reg key look up dictionary thing they have, I got cracking. Aside from a few minor differences in what I was supposed to edit, pcpitstop lead me nice and straight right into the values I had to one of the keys. Afterwards, I tested my comp again and still got the same net speeds. So, reboot!
AND HOLY SHIT IT'S FAST NOW. Where I once got 800kbps from pcpitstop I now got 2300kbps. Where I once got 1.2mbps from the other place I now got 4.4mbps. That's more than I'm supposedly allowed! Thank you Comcrap.
So, itching for something to test it on, I whipped out bittorrent and started downloading. I'm currently getting about 600kBps (notice, BIG B) download. One stream at 500-550, the other two at between 30-50 and 60-70. Holy shit man. That's so blazing fast. I bet I could have got even better service at my old apartment if I'd just made these changes. Back there I had a max download of (supposedly) 5mbps. Wish I'd discovered this earlier.
