Think of if magss had been discipline and staid on Australia. He could have other than perhaps letters to pip and check up on his gentleman but then he would have to reveal his form and I think part of the making him a gentleman was to look at him. If had not returned to England he would not have known of his daughter which is a sense pips can be seen as a replacement for.

The character of Abel Magwitch/Jack Maggs could be viewed as the resisting hero as his triumphs come in resisting the “justice” system. Starting out with the first interaction with pip we see he trades fair and curt,
