Today was the first day that I actually had some time to sit down and practice some new pieces. I've been so swamped with homework that I've been slacking in the practice department... it feels good though.
I'm working on a Villa-Lobos prelude, as well as a piece from his Suite Populaire - both really sweet and delicate. It'll take a while to get them down to where I can tease the feeling out of it.
In other news I early voted the day before yesterday. All my friends up here voted today - however in a state as red as Alaska our votes really don't matter that much, but dammit... I WILL BE HEARD! rar.
I think this is the first time I have a real interest in the presidential elections, and also the first time that I feel a real connection with a candidate... however with the news coming in that McCain's been gaining ground I've been glued to Pollster.com every day to see how things are shaping up, and today I'm pleased with the results. Obama's up by a healthy margin - 311 projected electoral votes to 143 for McCain.
The only thing that bothers me is both my brother and his wife are die-hard Republicans, so we've all decided to not speak of the election or anything about it... however even in passing conversation they still say some stuff that gets under my skin from time to time.... for example... we were watching The Day After Tomorrow... you know, the movie about global warming stalking Jake Gyllanhaal (not well enough aparently), and they start making comparisons to An Inconvenient Truth stating how ridiculous the idea of global warming is and how it was just a huge propaganda film - even though they never actually watched it.
Then while my brother was out, his wife and I got into an argument about Obama's plan to expand the Americorps program. She said he was going to institute a "mandatory volunteer program" and would in fact prosecute those who didn't participate... saying he was some sort of communist, and that the Americorps program was a waste of tax dollars. The kicker was when I asked her if she knew what Americorps was, she said she had no clue, but was sure it was worthless.
the truth? My best friends up here and around the state have almost all volunteered for the Americorps program at some point since its inception. It's basically the peace corps aimed at ourselves. The volunteers work for far less than minimum wage and do tasks from running Job Centers that train people to get better jobs, to running community Rec Centers, to helping prisoners get their GEDs and training them for success on the outside.
I know the worth of those programs, and it took everything I had not to spit in her face and call her a fucking retard.... but she's family, so I just walked out of the room for a few moments, then quickly switched topics to Guild Wars.
Then again, what should I expect from a gun store employee.
Wow... that was a long rant.... sorry about that.
Next post will be about things warm and fuzzy... and squishy... all at the same time.... like a furry burrito or something.
Unless Obama doesn't win tomorrow...
Then expect another long angry post.
let's hope for the furry burrito.

melladoree:
Americorps rocks! I had a similar conversation with my mom last night that somehow turned into her talking about China and how she needs to buy American Made Products and when I say conversation, I mean me sitting on the phone tuning her Republican views out. What can you do
