President's Day Weekend thought experiment for you:
Imagine you go back in time to April 1776. General Washington has just arrived in New York after an arduous 11 day march from Boston to New York. He and the Continental Army have just marched approximately 20 miles per day after a gruelling winter spent outside Boston. He is currently attempting to fortify New York, expecting (correctly) that the British will soon arrive with an Armada and if the superior British navy were to access the rivers his position would be untenable and he would be forced to retreat and give up the port of New York, disrupting shipping to all of New England for the duration of the war.
Attempt to explain to the General that in the 20th and 21st centuries not only will there be powerful machines called "automobiles" that harness the power of thousands of tiny explosions and would have allowed his entire army to move from Boston to New York in 4 hours, but, for one week each year, these machines would be sold at drastically reduced prices in his honor.
