Its a funny thing . I've never voted in my life , or really cared who got voted in .
I have always been pretty much of the opinion that they were all a bunch of lying bastards and the country would pretty much be the same whoever you voted for . They, as far as i have witnessed, never seem to stick to what the promise pre-election anyway .
I am still of that opinion .
So it came as a shock to myself that i stayed awake last night till 4am ( BTW i usually get up at around 5am) watching the election results for another country . The first thing i did this morning was to check them on the internet.
If anyone from America tells me it is nothing to do with me , i would have to ask them why i feel so concerned and have lost so much sleep over their decisions .
Today i am bitterly disappointed .
I always defended the US population by pointing out that the population our media portrayed as the whole country, was only a small section of central America and that this no way represented the whole of the country . This is done, i would say, in the same way as our country is portrayed as English toffs and football hooligans in Europe and abroad . Truth is those generalisations make for better TV and sell more newspapers and in turn make other countries feel better about themselves.
I concede now that i was wrong .
What worries me the most about the next four years is not how i feel , but that in me feeling scared and concerned , what must the people in the middle east feel , having the actions of the last few years by the white house justified by the masses in the US .
I am amazed that the larger percentage of Americans really believe they are in any danger at all , and really believe that creating more enemies in the middle east is a means to end that danger . Do they forget that 9/11 happened whilst Bush was supposed to be defending them ?.
Not for a moment did i think that Kerry would have made a great deal of difference in peoples attitude to the US , but in some way , in a big way it would have shown the rest of this world that the largest superpower in the world was not standing behind a regime focused on war and terrorism . It has taken our government a long time to come to the conclusion that this was not a way to solve terrorist threats and only after doing this have we got to a stage that our country is free for now from IRA bombings .
Looks like now we've picked another fight , and i don't think we're going to get a call before these guys blow up our cities .
Still , i made it home tonight without meeting one terrorist and i fully believe i will tomorrow and the next day and for some time to come . I am not scared for my safety or for that matter the safety of any US citizens . I am however very concerned for the armies associated with our two countries and the populations that these armies will meet over the next four years in the middle east especially . I wonder how they would have voted ?
