today was the 17th annual huntsville alabama highland games. i rode down with zel, neil, willie, and neils adorable little rugrat faith.
the ride down was cool. i expected as much ribbing about the lack of rehearsal time i give the band (some o the fellas havent seen me since last year). and i filled them in on my work woes and promotions as well as my current relationship status.
willie gave me some amazing compliments. before we even played, he introduced me to a guy that used to play with the nashville band but currently resides in huntsville. he told the guy that i had, saved many a gig. after our first performance as a band, willie told me how i had blended and played better that the other members of the side(snare) section). we hadnt played together in months-but gelled perfectly.
you need to understand what that meant coming from him. willie has decades of experience in the music industry. another great moment today was his recounting of a time when he hung out with tony williams and herbie hancock in new york. this man has played and hung out with giants. discussing the death of elvin jones was also memorable today, since elvin is a mutual hero, and willie had met him too!!
being with zel again always brings a laugh. this man could strike up a conversation with anyone on the planet. he related a story today of a buddy that kept referring to him as grandpa since zel was yawning during an evening performance. zel showed up at the guys house the next morning, had coffee with the guys wife, then proceeded to wake the guy by playing revile on the bugle at 7 in the morning.
i cannot tell you the things this man leaves on my voicemail.
and hanging with neil is always a pleasure. he understands exs and heartbreak like few others. seeing him with his darling 6 year old is heartwarming and inspiring. faith had such a great time today. on the way home, though, she started coughing.
she had curled up between me and neil in an effort to sleep on the way home. 30 minutes outside of nashville, she started to cough. on the 3rd cough, her poor stomach started spewing up the contents from the afternoons revelries . luckily, neil directed the detritus towards himself and a well placed red, solo plastic cup. we all did our best to calm the angel down, as neil turned towards me and said, see what you have to look forward to?
faith made it to nash vegas ok, and we all said goodbyes after a well spent pre-summer afternoon...

said goodbye to a dear friend tonight.i'm sure we'll visit sometime in the future, but our relationship was taking us to places we didn't want to go...

Why can't I call you up and meet for coffee and talk in person and give me advice and pat me on the back and give me a hug when I need it? Why are some of my most precious friends so far away from me??
