i used to celebrate the fourth o' july like everyone else:friends, family, cookouts. i would run around screaming like a little school girl when my father or brother would light a string of firecrackers. i would stare in fascination as those little black disks would grow into firey charcoal snakes when touched by flame.
my grandmother passed away on the fourth over a decade ago. she spent the last three years of her life in a great and terrible battle with cancer. her last moments were spent in the arms of her husband, who joined her several years later.they remain one of the few examples of true love i've seen in my life. their passing took a little more light from my world.
odd how holidays that once held so much happiness and joy are now only reminders of saddness and pain...
