A very cooling, very needed thunderstorm has begun. The rain and wind washing away three days of 90 degree heat here in the District. Those who know me well will know how significant a rainstorm it must be if I am writing of it in a positive light.

In regards to the weeks since my last journal entry: where to begin? The past 14 days have been some of the best of my professional life. I was invited, at the last minute, to direct a 10 minute pieces as part of Susan Lori Parks 365 project. Last year she undertook to write one play a day for a solid year. This year, hundreds, maybe thousands of theater companies all over the country and beyond have been producing these works on a rotating basis. One company per city per week. Each company expected to put their own particular take on it. I was tasked with creating a complete play in one afternoon. I was provided with a script I had no read prior to the day, given two fantastic actresses (really, I couldn't have been more lucky to have a chance to work with such talent), and given various other rules, and told to be done by 6 PM. The plays were staged this past Monday, to wonderful effect.

In the meantime, I was also tapped (at the last minute, one again) to assistant direct "Valparaiso" by Don DeLillo, best known for his novels "Underworld" and the recent "Falling Man" (about 9/11). It's a strange and wonderful play about a man who boards a flight for Valparaiso, Indiana, and somehow ends up in Valparaiso, Chile. Only, it is no way about that. You'll have to come see it to understand. Yes, that was a shameless plug. Credit my PR background. I am always selling plays I am involved in. Speaking of which, I'll also be peripherally involved in the second Capital Fringe Festival, again, and will also be directing (really directing, no assisting here!) some staged readings coming up in (either) August or September. Considering Peter Marks (the Post critic) just called the company I will be directing these for the "best young company in Washington", you'll understand why I'm slightly excited. Now, if the scripts would just become available in the United States, that would be nice.

My apartment remains unpainted, making over a year now of living in a bedroom that can only be described as "childish". Seriously, every time I get around to painting it, I get a new show and my weekends evaporate and I'm stuck explaining to visitors why the wall of my bedroom is painted with a mural of The Happy Little Village. Check my last journal entry's photo accompaniment for embarrassing evidence. On the other hand, considering the four women playing Twister on the bed in that photo, apparently, I'm still doing pretty well in life, regardless of odd decor.

And now, back to our regularly unscheduled thunderstorm.
