We met in person because I had a bunch of frequent flyer miles and we'd sort of half-joked about me coming to visit, and one night when I was feeling rather impulsive I asked him if he was serious and he said he totally was, so I bought tickets. Since they were frequent flyer, it cost me five bucks, and I wasn't doing anything else all summer so I kind of figured, "Eh, what the hell, right?"
