I am going to try explain my family drama, but thinking about it is just confusing and weird. Living in the middle of the desert where you only interact with animals and a small section of your immediate family drives you into a psychosis. My dad and step mom seem to have lost their perception of reality beyond their front door, making it difficult to deal with them. My sister and her husband are as selfish and whiny as they ever were, but have nobody else to vent to besides my parents. This means that by the time I get the drama, it's because nobody out there can take it any more so they tell me. My niece, who is 13 or so, even got in on lecturing me. Not because I actually did anything wrong, mind you, but because her dad (and I assume others) bitch about the fact that they are stuck dealing with their own decisions.
Background: My sister, brother-in-law, and their three kids moved out to live with my parents in the middle of nowhere a few years ago. They took with them their 2007 PT Cruiser, and tried to drive it on rocky dirt roads as though they were cruising on the highway. My sister drives like such an asshole that she broke the camshaft on the car. Anyway, my parents offered to give me their old 1996 Ford Explorer when I came out to visit in 2008, and I was happy to have a second car. Right before I went out there, they changed their minds and decided that we should take the Cruiser because it wasn't suited to the roads. My sister still owed (and still owes) quite a bit on it, but they couldn't get rid of it, so I accepted it after letting them know I couldn't afford the car payments. They were cool with that and agreed to continue paying for the thing. Since receiving it, I have replaced the camshaft position sensor, all four wheels (she banged them up driving like an idiot and the tires wouldn't hold air), all four tires, and the brakes. The air conditioner doesn't work, but I'm not paying to fix that. Anyway, my parents are a bit miffed that they're still paying for the car and I can't afford to help them with payments (as I told them in the beginning), and my brother in law gets pissed any time he hears that we spend money on anything because we should be paying the car payment (that he's not even paying!)
If I could give the car back, I would, but nobody wants it. Everyone just wants to bitch, bitch, bitch and try to blame me for doing... uh... nothing wrong.
I am ever so thankful for my friends - apparently they really do keep you sane. In the meantime, I kind of want to just have it out with my brother-in-law and call him out for being an asshole because I know nobody else will do it. I want to punch him in the face, but I'm 2,000 miles away. Perhaps I will just call him on the phone one day when I'm itching to get into an argument.

That is why you can pick your friends - to counter balance the idiocy of your family.
