I know, but the rock I live under is quite cozy.
While I really loved "Finding Neverland," "THX" is fresher in my mind since we watched it last. And, I have to say, I wish somebody would smack Lucas' hands when he goes after his movies with that, "But I only want to change a few things..." look in his eyes. I never saw the original, of course, but it was so painfully obvious that scenes had been altered (hello, crappy CG)... and I couldn't help but think of the raping of Star Wars and became very sad.
The original cut of the film had been available for several years... but was not immediately available on DVD... [partly] because of his desire to slightly re-work parts of the film before it was released on DVD.
Lucas finally set about getting a DVD version of the film together in early 2004, putting the film through a meticulous audio/video restoration and making use of computer-generated imagery to modify certain scenes to his liking... In addition, Lucas shot new footage for the film, and even went as far as to re-shoot several scenes using computer systems to insert the actors and replace existing footage....
The revised DVD version does alter the narrative of the story in subtle ways...

I've created art, before. I'm not half bad, at times. In middle school, I did a somewhat good still life in art class, which is still hanging in the living room at my mother's house. I remember bringing it home, and she hung it, and I kept looking at it with that critical eye - "But, Mom - it really looks funny right *there*... can't I just take it down and retouch that one part?" "No," she would say, "it's beautiful, and you're not changing a thing."
Of course no art is perfect, but had I tweaked it once, I would have kept on changing it. Over and over, until it became so far removed from its actual source that it wasn't the same picture, anymore. And I'd never be satisfied. No artist is ever satisfied with their ability to put their imagination into a tangible format.
And so it is with Lucas.
Except his mother isn't standing between him and his art, telling him to back the fuck up and leave well enough alone.
I've never seen THX 1138. I'm not a huge Lucas fan, though like any child of the 80s I love the first Star Wars trilogy. I do have to argue that the Special Editon of A New Hope was an improvement, effects-wise. I remember seeing the original version of A New Hope shortly after, and thinking how crappy and low-budget it looked.
I've never seen Finding Neverland. But I should. Cause I think Kate Winslet is curvylicious and mmmmmm Johnny Depp. Can you believe he's going to be singing in Sweeny Todd? HELL YEAH! Singing serial killers!
