If you've never read "The Silver Key" by HP Lovecraft I strongly urge it. It's not Eldritch or Cyclopean but it is one of the finest pieces of fiction I've ever read. It was so hard just picking that one quote (putting the whole first three pages in here seemed to copyright-infringing. I wrote a short inspired by the story and (in my opinion) failed to capture what Lovecraft did.
