Rant-like post, though rather calm in the retelling.
Had a conversation with father the other day after talking over at work about the substantial corrosive properties of carbonate/caffeinated soda pops. Anyways, I mentioned that I was considering really cutting back on my Coke and Dew. He said, "yeah, you need to... you drink too much of it."
Why would that response bother me (for it is true)? It's because the guy is unliked because he's a drunk. He's tipsy by 10am and "snoggered" by afternoon. He's recovering from two hip replacements and his ankles swell to a grotesque level. He says it's because his legs are healing but I know for a fact (from his doctor, that's pretty factoral) his legs swell because he won't stop drinking. But it runs deeper than that. After my parents split and my brother and I lived with him there was never anything to eat or drink in the house... except his cheap beer. The water was unfiltered from a well and, literally, there was no food in the house. The only way my brother and I ate was from our grandmother, a neighbor or our mother had to come pick us up and take us home with her (which was out of the school district so wasn't done during the schoolweek) or take us somewhere to get something to eat. Once she bought us food that we could have at home and came by one day for us and found our father eating it. And drinking his beer. Most recently his ex-wife (not my mother) had an accident at work and he begged for her to come stay with him so he could tend to her. She showed up and he was drunk off his ass. At a cookout, he was cooking wobbling behind the grill and even drooling. He and I took a ride to the auto store and on the way back he knew he was too fucked up and had me drive home (he has never done that before). So he sat on the passenger side with his Glock in hand resting on his thigh while we rode past the police station, shooting at stumps as we neared our destination.
And I need to drink less Mountain Dew. I hate a hypocrite. I hate a drunk even more.
