hey there -- i'm having a fucking awesome time thus far!
the other guy who works on sad robot with me, steve, had also slept through his alarm so we both got waitlisted on a flight from seattle to austin no problem. however it was impossible to get onto a flight to dallas, so my uncle who's really really rad -- i mean he's like 60 and he has the new notwist record, tom watis' last two, leonard cohen, urinetown, jenks tex carman, the who deluxe ed. of 'my generation' -- and more importantly he's super swell -- he fucking drove up to dallas from austin to get us then drove us back to the airport to get our luggage, and now he's lent us his car!
my uncle's car is a pimped-out red cadillac, so i'm really visiting in style. he lives like 30 min.s outside of austin actually and tonight i got lost (and pulled over for speeding but the cop just gave me a warning even though for some reason my license is apparently suspended back in wa -- likely it's those unpaid parking tickets?)
so like clearly some weird stuff has happened but it's all gone really well in the end. steve and i are getting along swell and thus far i've seen lots of old friends and the next few days are gonna be very busy seeing music and friends.
there are a LOT of cute girls walking around in not a whole lot of clothing -- and that is very nice.
i was interviewed by the daily paper here today in a panel discussion with three guys with small labels -- too bad maggie from kill rock stars couldn't make it i heart her. dudes from misra and peekaboo said cool stuff and maybe i wasn't too dumb. we'll see.
first impressions of the music:
* WASHINGTON SOCIAL CLUB is a killer trio with lead dude who's every bit as sexy and talented as mick jagger ca. 1964. really. oh my god we're gonna try to sign this band but i bet we're way too late...
* BLACK LIPSTICK from austin are totally rad clean/ velvets/ television kinda band -- really unpretentious and awesome.
* OXES kick ass -- angular spazz improv really amazing.
* CASS MCCOMBS is fucking amazing too -- on same label as the oxes, monitor outta baltimore. the guy's version of "sexual healing" was amazing.
* SPARROW is a decentband from vancouver, somehow related to the whole destroyer/ new pornogs scene.
* AISLERS SET played in the worst club i've ever ever seen -- the roxy -- bad sound bad layout bad vibe, sparkling neon on cement all over the place, i got an instant headace and they sounded like utter shit so we left immediately.
* the guy from the SWIRLIES is such an asshole his daggers to the rest of the band ruined the show.
* SCOUT NIBLETT is not so great live.
* INK is cool but i'm growing tired of the gang of four influence, all around...
* HIM/ SEEN was rad but they were too close to fusion too much of the time.
other impressions:
* I like BARBECUED BRISKET with collared greens.
* Laris from SOUND COLLECTOR/ ARTHUR is a god.
* My friend LEXIE is super sexy -- am glad I ran into her and she seemed to be hanging on to the weird spectral dude from LIFT TO EXPERIENCE, who was really sweet in a spectral ghost cowboy way.
* HOUSE PARTIES are the best.
* SALLY TIMMS is kind of a snob.
* so is everyone who works at NASTY LITTLE MAN.
* speaking of publicists, my publicist pal from ITSALIVEMEDIA and i didn't get to hang yet but ihope we do soon.
* steve from STARS AS EYES is super cool.
* Lisa from DRAG CITY is so cute and I was a total dork to her, flummoxed by her hotness, too bad.
* Hey -- our SHOWCASE is gonna kick serious ass!!!
* Tomorrow I hang with friends from Bubblecore,Spin (groooooan), Insound/ Tigerstyle, Bloodshot, Black Lipstick, Stars As Eyes, and my 2 bands -- Sin Ropas and Carissa's Wierd!
