Remember when black people were treated like shit back in the day?
Well, yeah, most of that hatred has shifted from blacks to Muslims, gay people and Hispanics. All the while the image of the modern "American" seems to only consist of MEN of European decent, while women and racial minorities still get the short end of the stick thanks to the long term effects of colonialism.
Apparently we are not true "Americans" since we are either African Americans, Arab Americans, women, gay Americans and so on. Plain old "Americans" are the men in flannel shirts and blue jeans putting hay stacks in the back of a pickup trucks. Women are not usually even considered in this argument from any side.
I consider myself a Black American because I am black and an American. I know my history, and I know that other Africans sold my ancestors into slavery, so fuck them! I'm an American!
That makes me wonder though.
What should so-called Asian Americans be called? Or Hispanic Americans? Ect....
What do YOU want to be called?
We call white people white and black people black, but how should we differentiate Hispanics from Asians while they have more similar skin color than whites an blacks? How about Native Americans and Australian Aborigines? When they are born in the U.S. are they Americans or some other subtitle?
What criteria is it that we must meet to be considered "American" instead of "xxxxxx American?"
