Things I has learned recently
Iron Man 2, while slightly less action-packed than the adverts and trailers might suggest, is stupidly entertaining. I loved the hell out of everyone's performances, especially Sam Rockwell, and almost surprised myself in how little I caught myself thinking "Blow something up, already!" during the film's many low-key talky bits. War Machine was cool as fuck aswell. I'm seeing it again on Tuesday (insanely, my Mum and I have bonded over comic book movies in the past few years)
Neil Edwards is one of the most amiable and friendly people I have ever met in my life. It turns out that he actually lives quite close to me and I saw him in the incredibly small-scale convention in Wrexham last week. I handed him my sketchbook already open on the appropriate page before he asked if he could have a look through it because he loves looking through sketchbooks. He has a flick through, admiring some of the stuff inside before going to make his mark. It took him absolutely ages, and you could see he was putting in a shitload of effort. At the end he sits back with a sigh of relief because "the face was doing his head in" and sheepishly asks "Is that okay?" Apparently he could still see bits he wasnt 100% happy with.
Look at it, its fucking awesome. He hands me back my sketchbook, almost surprised that I'm pleased with it and shakes my hand with the biggest smile on his face. Then he went on to tell me how much he'd enjoyed drawing it and thanked me profusely for giving him the opportunity, before making me promise I'd pester him in Bristol so he could see later additions in the book. Awesome!
I also got myself a very sexy Cap from Staz Johnson, who if anything seemed surprised/chuffed that he was to be featured in the book twice following his Daredevil from Birmingham last year. He was due to do a Q&A and the show organisers kept coming over to clarify things beforehand while we chatted about all the awful Youtube videos of him being patronised on BBC. "Do you colour them in yourself? You're a comic artist from Wakefield? That's odd!" etc
John McCrea didnt make it in the end, but I'm sure he had a good reason.
I also learned that somehow, I'm able to get away with wearing shirts like this
Finally, proof that you should never go anywhere without a camera or mobile phone with a camera on it. I'd have been absolutely gutted had I missed the chance to get a picture of this
Hope you are having an ace time at the comic convention - can't wait to the pictures of the sketches you and leo got.
