Thanks for all the recommendations. A lot of it I was already aware of, but its given me some stuff to look out for. Finding new bands is awesome, and there are a few now that I wish I could go back to when I first heard them, back when everything was new.
I also found the download page for the free compilations Punktastic have been putting out over the years. There's about 40 tracks on each, so I'm bound to find at least ONE band on there that I like, right?
I don't think its too long now before the annual performance thingy I'm encouraged to do at my music school. Having seen photos from it I can comfortably say that were my teacher to convince me go ahead with it, I'd be comfortably the oldest person doing it. I also own the sexiest guitar of anyone there. TAKE THAT, KIDS! THINK YOU'RE SO COOL WITH YOUR YOUTH AND YOUR EARLIER INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC? WELL I'VE GOT DISPOSABLE INCOME AND THE AGE TO APPRECIATE IT! *ahem*
On the one hand I'm reluctant to bother, but it could be pretty cool. I think it's a bit more laid back than a classical recital or similar nonsense, so if nothing else it could be a laugh. I suppose if I were to do it I should start thinking about a song to play. Nothing too complicated (because I suck) nothing too obvious, and something that I actually like for the song rather than just how it's out together. Also since a fair amount of this will involve schoolchildren and an audience of their parents, it might be worth being mature for a change and not choosing something horribly offensive.
My knowledge of this whole thing is based on photos I've seen from previous ones, so while there's backing bands and stuff I'm not sure how involved it actually gets. I'm leaning towards this at the moment, but mostly because I can already play it. Maybe I should try something a bit more challenging though....

Why not go the folk route. It's all the rage at the moment.

Folk, schmolk. You should do a cover of a Dillinger song or something equally crazy
