New Year...New what exactly?
First off, Happy New year to you all, I hope you had some fun bringing in the new year, and that 2012 is better than 2011, and if 2011 was fantastic, well then I just wished you more fantasticness so shut up and let me get on with this.
On a few different forms of social media I heard people lamenting 2011 and wishing for 2012 to hurry up and get here already so that the shit-tastic year would be over and wonderfulness could arrive. I am sad to say that the cynic in me scoffed at that notion. I thought to myself, how will it magically be different, it's just a new calendar, nothing special....how will it be?
I think I took this train of thought because I was thinking of it how I think of birthday's, which aren't a big deal to me at all. Every year I have one, and all of you do as well, and inevitably I get asked "well, feel any different" and no, I don't. I now have to remember to answer differently when asked one specific question, but I don't FEEL different at all, and I was taking that mindset along when reflecting on the new year. I think this is because my birthday is so close to the new year that my mind lumps em up a bit and so I wonder about the feeling of it all.
After a bit of thought on it and some discussion with a friend I took a step back and decided to think differently about it. I started to think of it as a new calendar, a new beginning, and a new mindset. If my friends and acquaintances were utilizing this mindset, well then the wonderfulness of 2012 seemed much more attainable. The cynic in me went back into his little cubby hole where he belongs and the more positive thinking Matt took the forefront again.
I know that a majority of problems start at square one, your own brain, and so I hope that the new beginning is a way for me and others to reset that square in our brains. Now I will not take other problems lightly as a lot of those can be out of our hands, things such as layoffs or inability to find jobs due to the economies of countries all across this globe are problems that we can't help. Breakups,, health, things of this nature can be effected by our own minds, but they also involve outside influences that we have no control over, and so these too should not be cynicized by the likes of me.
Once I had reflected, as I often do, I knew that my initial scoffing was not completely justified and I mentally apologized for doing so. (They didn't know I scoffed, so they didn't have to hear the apology) It was then that I decided to take on that more positive mindset for myself, it's a slow transition, and look at this as a new stepping stone, a new path, etc.
A new year can feel differently if you let it. A new year can be better if you act on it. A new year is something that comes to us all, we just all need to embrace it.
It isn't just another day, it's a brand new day (thanks Sting) in a brand new year. It isn't magic, and it won't happen over night, but it can be exactly what we want out of it, if we embrace it and let it.
Here's hoping you embrace 2012 and all the awesome it can hold for you. Here's hoping that you can figure out the answers to some of those questions you have been pondering. Here's hoping that you pick one of your resolutions to flesh out, to truly look into, to take for a ride just to see where you wind up. Here's to hoping I can learn to take my own advice and take this journey with you all.
