I got the George Harrison cd Let it Roll for Christmas and I was listening to it in the car today and I had some thoughts on it all.
Inevitably everyone has a favorite Beatle, it goes beyond the Beatle or Rolling Stone argument because I think it speaks of the person themself. Perhaps this as been addressed before and better than what I am about to do, but here I go anyways.
My favorite Beatle has always been George Harrison, I like the others, but George is my fave. It started back in the 80s when I was aware of his album On Cloud 9, before I was ever aware of any of the Beatles albums. Perhaps I had heard their songs somewhere along the way, but Got My Mind Set on You was and is my favorite song of the 80s and that shaped my brain into realizing that the person who came up with that was simply awesome, good thing as I became aware of more music I was right to think that.
I was thinking about it today, and I think my admiration of George grew when I learned which songs of the Beatles were his, but I also came to realize that it was because I see a bit of myself in the roll he played, and that is why I like him even more. You see I am the guy in the group that knows his roll, plays it well, and revels in it. I am an important part of it all, I help the conversations flow, I add my words and jokes, and every so often I come at you with a piece of brilliance like Here Comes the Sun. I like the roll I play because I know that I am part of something important and that it couldn't exist without me, but I also don't mind having someone else in the spotlight so that I can relax and enjoy it all. I can excel on my own, but be part of a group as well, I am versatile like that.
That is how I view George in the Beatles, and I may not be completely correct in this assumption, but this is how I view it, so I am right. LOL
Another thing I was thinking about is how Paul is my second favorite then John and finally Ringo, and I think a lot of this as well was due to not being aware of the group until later in the 80s. My parents don't really listen to music all that often so I have had the fortune of finding artists on my own as I go along, which has been kind of fun in it's own way. I was thinking about how my likings may have been shaped differently had John not been killed, or had they all been killed at the same time, both obviousy hypothetical situations, but both that would leave one looking at the group differently perhaps. I really like Paul and George's solo stuff and that is why they rank like they do, and John's was good as well but I am still not as aware of it as I could be. Then when you delve into the Beatles repertoire you hear Paul and John's voice more than the other's so had I found the group before the individual maybe my thoughts would have been different as well. As it stands George is my favorite Beatle because of how his words and music caress my ears and brain, and for the role he played in such a world altering group.

Oh, POE! Oh, Annabel Lee! You reminded me of a lost love. I performed The TellTale Heart a few times - good stuff. THANK you.
