Childhood's End
I've hunted clockwork tigers,
sailed the fizzing soda sea.
I've scanned the gumdrop shore,
heard the songs of Hon-a-lee.
I've climbed up licorice mountain,
that rises black from redvine vale.
I've sailed on a piece of cotton cloud,
and fled the banshee's wail.
I've trod the nightmare reaches,
where the bogeyman won't go.
Fought the fabled yeti beast,
'crost himalayan snow.
I've scewered the grim leviathan,
on a spear of narwhale horn.
Had rose petals in my tea,
as I dined with lady morn.
But the long slow years have caught me,
ground all my old tales to dust.
Adult cares are upon me,
and my imagination is starting to rust.
I long to dream of unseen vales,
and seas that kiss the sky.
I pine for sweeter, adventurous days
when I always dared to try.
Twas science that killed the unicorns,
the reason the fairies fled.
Twas logic that slew the jabberwock
and turned my gold to lead.
But there is hope in great age, I think
my old tales will cease to be lost.
I'll find the paths to the joys I once knew
when my hair turns to frost.
