my opening was last night for the "Women Artists and Altered Bodies" group show at the Verle Annis Gallery. There was my sculpture, two videos, one animation, two photo series, a performance art piece and three speakers. My work consisted of all the appliances in my house wired to a remote switch (a converted light switch with a battery pack) that when activated would start whirring and buzzing about in a very disconcerning manner.
my work was a metaphor for the constant innundation upon women of media and technology to surround themselves with contraptions to "make them better wives, "make them more beautiful," or "make their lives easier."
at one point in the evening all the artists made statements about the work and so I explained my concept and demonstrated activation of the work- ending with "the nice thing about MY work, is that you can turn it off," as a joke about not being able to "turn off" the media and technology. Leaving off of course, that final bit about media and technology in my nervousness and stammering.
Not exactly a smooth thing to say in a room full of video art.
Fuck. I am such a walking sitcom.
ps. you can now enjoy my website- it includes terribleshy's calendar of events for LA and you can feel free to submit your own. Let me know whatcha think
