In the interest of using this thing like my old livejournal (exciting, I know), here's a dream I had last night that I wanted to share. It's about an ex-girlfriend, but written in second-person so you can get in on the action too
The setting is a country community, visibly similar to the parts of 101 near San Luis Obispo but the people are really much more country than I'd expect from people around there, let's say this is more likely in Arkansas. It's a small town with some hills, tall dry grass and dirt roads where the buildings have a dusty sun-baked patina.
I live in the town, I work doing what I do now (programming) at some small company in a big classically southern looking building on the side of town, maybe it used to be a courthouse. The company holds instructional presentations for the community often, and they are holding one today. There are a few scattered people about in there, a colleague of mine is presenting and holding up some prop, afternoon light is coming through the windows casting beams in the warm, dry air.
You walk in while I am still at the office, sitting at an old desk half-working while I watch the presentation. I knew you were coming by, but it had been a long time since I'd seen you and I'd been excited but nervous since you said you would be nearby and could take a train in to see me. You're in a simple summer dress, I'm in jeans and white tee.
I stand up as I notice you walk in and quietly rush over to you to give you a tentative hug. We went out a long time ago, had a terrible break up but over time kept in touch so I am always worried about overstepping my affection for you, even small rejections from you affect me quite a bit so I try to stay on the side of the line that won't trigger any.
You hug back and smile sincerely but politely. So far so good I guess, let's get out of here. I leave all my stuff at my desk, it's a simple town, and we stroll out of the building into the warm afternoon.
The office is nearby an outdoor market with a variety of wood-covered stalls. Most of those selling fruits and foods have already packed up for the day, but a few selling things like handmade pots and bowls haven't packed up for the day yet.
Here's where things probably turn further away from real possible events, but it's my dream and a boy can dream, right?
As we're walking through the market, you put your arm around mine and I begin to affect the gentleman strolling through town with a lovely lady on his arm look. You laugh at that, but leave your arm. Inside I am warm and happy, I've certainly missed being allowed to love you and this is the warmest physical contact we've shared in years. I smile.
It really is a perfect day and we enjoy wandering through the small attractions the town has to offer for a few hours. Nothing I've said has scared you away all day, and you're still holding my arm while we walk and tell each other stories of our lives. I'm feeling confident, probably too confident, but also terrified of the feeling I will have if you were to take the train back out of the city right now.
The sun is beginning to show signs of setting, the last train out is running through my mind with you on it taking you away. I ask if you're interested in staying in town tonight. You say sure and smile. I smile too and hug you much less tentatively. You hug back. I smile again and start thinking of what I can cook you for dinner.
I wake up smiling.
