So my head is going to explode. I just got back from physics and we're onto relativity. The whole E equals m c squared business. The implications are kinda hairy. Could you imagine if we one day had the understanding and ability to easily convert energy into mass and vice versa?
I remember a discussion one time that revolved around the use of replicators on Star Trek: The Next Generation. About what we would do if we had that technology. It was unanimously agreed that we, as a people, are not ready for those kind of implications. We are a society of greed. They explain it away on the show saying that mankind changed, that money and possessions were no longer what was important. I find it hard to believe that in the short span of time between present day and the time in which Star Trek is set that we could come so far.
I mean, we've had thousands of years already, and we've just gotten worse.
Heavy stuff. Although when talking about destroying mass to turn it into energy I got a visual of someone beating up a person and saying, "oh, I'm just liberating their energy!" And that made me chuckle.
That and we talked about the possibility of travel faster than the speed of light and the possible implication of time travel. Like Fry on Futurama being his own grandfather. Good stuff.
