Following on from the question set by the lovely rainwolfkin concerning why we get modified. I also have had a few thoughts over the last couple of days, and for me personnally i think this is they way i look at it:
First and formost, i started getting tatoos when i was about 18/19. The main reason was that being very short for a guy, i had always (and in some respects i still do in certain situations) felt as though nobody listenes to me or didnt take me seriously. Having tattoos made people see i was older. Nowadays, I find that in my job when you can be walking into a situation with an pissed off editor, that out of all the enginneers, i dont get any hassle. I suppose that to them i look like a nutter! but i dont have people taking the piss anymore.
My tattoos have grown over the years with me as a person, from the tiny body glove one i started with (which has gone to a better place!). It has moved on now. They are more visable. I always go the next step with the newest tattoo. First i said i wouldnt have any below t shirt level, as if i was almost embaressed to have them...
Then you start a sleve off.
You panic at first, Its a big step. But afterwards you get used to it you feel comfortable with the new level of staring it will bring from the chavs! They are me, and more importantly, i am them, or i am what they signify. I wouldnt have that any other way. I dont care if people are put off, thats their problem. I wouldnt be the person i am today if i didnt have tattoos.
The pain is also a part of it. You do get addicted to the pain and the buzzing noise. I manage to get one probably every 8 months to a year. Its great coming up with a new design, deciding where to put it. Sometimes i do get one after i feel a bit low. It does help in a strange way.
The funniest thing is people asking about my squares on my forarm. "what the meaning behind it?" They look confused and even disapointed when i say there isnt a meaning, its just a design, I mean, i could bullshit, but whats the point in lying to a muppet who doesnt understand.
I love them, and how they make me feel. Heres to more.
