well boys and girls, monday the 29th i went and saw probably one of the best bands to come out form scotland and the UK, and the most depressing thing is these guys have MUCHO TALENT but they are breaking up.
I am of course talking about the beta band. I saw them in sunny shepards bush, i managed to get a great view (being short, that is a god send) and i was totaly blown away. These guys are multi talented with songs that really grab you, throw you about and take you into different styles, all with one song!
The lead singer does a song (within that he is moving from lead guitar to the 2nd set of drums!, the next song the bassist take the leads accustic guitar and sings a song, the drummer starts off one track on purcusion, then back to main drums, he also has a go on the keyboard with another guy. The main synth guy uses tiny little blow powered keyboard in one track as well as a couple of decks. Talking of which, this guy is fairly quiet with his scratching throughout the set...until the end, when he pulls out a bloody impressive scratching section, which, believe me is saying something since i have seen kid koala playing!
One brilliant and quite emotional part was the whole audience singing, in what was perfect tune and beat, (to the point of the lead singer saying we sounded better than they did!) was then end section of DRY THE RAIN-"if theres something inside that you wanna say, say it out loud it'll be ok, i will be allright, i will be allright (then repeat!!) No music playing at all.
They played a couple of tracks from heros but must were the classics from the 3EPS (dry the rain, its not to beautiful, inner meet me) and Hot shots (squares)
After the 1st oncor i thought it couldnt get any better. Then (you guessed it) they came out for a 2nd. This was one of the most amazing things i have seen and one of the strong memorys i have in what was a blur of funny, cool, strong tunes and alternative music making......4 people playing 2 drum kits in a break beat style!!
I think a good measuring stick to how good a gig was, is how much you can chat to people about it! My mate and i spent the tube journey back arguing about their style. I am a big longterm fan, he has only recently got into it. To me they can't do wrong, he thinks that their moving around the equipment style detracts from the music (to bitty and broken up). He thinks they should stick to one style. The syth/dj guy is a prime example. He was feckin amazing on the scratch section and could definatley go on and just dj. But sticking to one style is not what they are about. We need more bands that don't stick to the rules like the beta band.
One part of the gig, someone shouted out "dont split up!!" and the lead guy just turned around and said, " well, we could carry on and become a millionaire and sit on my arse all day, but thats not what i am". Brilliant, and i think that descibes them down to a tee.
They will be very sadly missed, but i hope their talents will come through in other projects. They will be back in some form. Heres to you all, and to anybody who was there with me. ROCK ON!!
