so. i'm at home, chilling by myself on a friday night. watching rush : beyond the lighted stage. easily one of my favorite bands. alas, as the documentary notes, not exactly a chick magnet. however, it is always refreshing to hear how much sound three guys can produce, their insanely high level of musicianship and lyrics i can relate to, and through which i can easily chart different stages of my life. through their overtly-thematic, complexly-arranged and ridiculously ubergeeky stages, into the more modern, synth-driven, less rocking albums, or through permanent waves, moving pictures and signals - one of the most amazing three-album stretches of any rock-n-roll band ever - rush has always found a simple, melodic appeal with me. if they're changing time signatures umpteen times a song, quoting shakespeare or just laying down a stone-cold riff, they are one of the best rock-n-roll bands ever. and they kick ass live.
