I posted that entry yesterday and copy/pasted it to my myspace blog and e-mailed it to my friends in my address book. Within a short time I got a reply from a very close friend of mine in Utah that basically concurred with my little rant at the end about my fantasies about doing something to a molester. She sent me a link to the National Public Sex Offender Registry and said "this will scare the heck out of you". I clicked on the link and found out that there are 60 registered sex offenders in my town. 3 of them live within a block from my house. But that was not the bombshell (I'm getting nauseous again thinking about this). One of the names on the list was identical to the name of the husband of one of my good friends on my e-mail list. I thought "what are the odds" and clicked on the name. His picture came up, with the offense committed (c288 lewd and lascivious act with a child under the age of 14). I started shaking and went in the bathroom and threw my guts up. The husband is my friend too. The whole family are our friends and we have known them the several years that we have lived here and we never knew. Needless to say it upset Kris too, but I was visibly shaken. I did not sleep last night. While clicking on ALL of the 60 names I saw one other person that I knew, not a friend just a casual acquaintance, but someone who has had contact with my children. HE is a child molester and was also convicted of that c288 as well.
Last night I got another response from another friend in the e-mail who said the guy I sent him the picture I had taken of used to come into our other friend's coffee shop and buy cookies for little kids and then wait for them to come in and give them to them.
I also watched that DATELINE special last night on online predators.
At this point I'm basically terrified to let my kids out of our sight at all. I already get made fun of for being overprotective, but now I know I'm going to be worse than before.
On a lighter note, the band had an awesome productive practice yesterday and we did a photoshoot for the myspace profile. We may have found a bass player as well, we will be auditioning him this weekend. Rock on!
