Last night I lost an amazing woman, who gave and gave, never asking for anything in return. She loved me unconditionally and was always there when I needed her. May I follow her example. I love you Grandma, you will be missed.
At the age of 96, she was diagnosed with bone and lung cancer. She was in amazing shape, especially given her age. The last time she was in a hospital was 1959! And she was there only for a hysterectomy, nothing life threatening. This time, however, when she returned home from the hospital Thursday morning, she knew the end was near. She got her affairs in order and willed herself to let nature take it's course.
In ways, I regret not being able to see her one last time, but I'm also relieved that I never had to see her in a debilitated state, I can just cherish the amazing memories I have of her. I was able to speak to her on the phone one last time. She told me "you can't fix this one Davey, but I will always love you." Such an interesting choice of words, that both hurt and heal.
Needless to say, I am getting ready to fly back home for a few days and I won't be on here much, if any. My family needs me now more than ever, especially my father, and I need them as well. In the end, it's all for the best, she went out on top with dignity and grace.
