My friend Jasmine gave me one of those charity wristbands that have become so popular recently. It's a white one for the "Make Poverty History" campaign.
I did a bit of research on the internet and found out that some schools in this country have banned children from wearing charity wristbands because they're consider them a health and safety risk. See this article
Now I can undertand the need to take jewellery off for sport. I used to work with a guy who lost his ring finger after he got his wedding ring caught on a goalpost during a game of football.
But when I was at school friendship bands were all the rage and we were never asked to take them off because there was a slim chance we might set fire to them on a bunsen burner.
It annoys me that when children show an interest in a good cause, in supporting a campaign or improving their political awareness, we who think we know better find an excuse to stick obstacles in their way.
Just before Christmas someone wrote in to the Metro newspaper complaining that there were never any newspapers left at his local station because all the school kids were reading them. WTF??? It makes me feel great to see the kids walking out of the station with their free newspapers every morning. It restores my faith in the human race and our ability to raise kids who are concerned with more than what trainers theyre wearing or how to get their hands on the latest games console.
It's the attitude of some adults that makes me more determined never to grow up. I'd rather hang on to the mindset of an idealistic teenager than become a cynical old killjoy who's convinced that the kids are only on this planet to piss me off and are good for nothing else.
Anyway, rant over, back to the charity wristbands.
In my hunt around the internet I found these ones. "Live wrong" bracelets are parodies of the wristbands that started it all, the "Live Right" bracelets from the Lance Armstrong foundation.
These are wristbands for people who dont watch what they eat, are proud to smoke, enjoy the odd drink or six and are stubbornly refusing to give up any of their bad habits. Hurrah! The company that sells them makes a donation to the World Land Trust, a charity that protects woodlands and rainforest, for each one purchased.
So, not only do I get to stick two fingers up at the healthy eating brigade, I get to save a tree too!
