the honeysuckle is blooming. stepping outside, especially in the evening, I'm hit by a wall of scent. I've read that smell is one of the strongest triggers of memory, and I believe it. every time I catch a whiff of the honeysuckle, my mind wanders back to childhood. growing up, there was a massive amount of honeysuckle snaking its way through the trees and underbrush surrounding the creek behind our house. we also had a very large jasmine vine which would over time climb all the way up to the roof, and laterally to form a green trim across the porch. so, each year we would get a double-dose of aromatic vines. the smell of either still brings back memories of playing in and around the creek until the last bit of twilight disappeared, and mom would yell for me to return home.
